Geriatric Psychiatry Subspecialty

The Geriatric Psychiatry Subspecialty Residency Program at the University of Manitoba was accredited by the Royal College in 2018. The program consists of well-supervised experiences in outpatient, inpatient and outreach rotations, in addition to off service rotations and elective time, with increasing responsibilities and autonomy during the training. Learners will have time and mentorship dedicated to the completion of a scholarly project. The overall goal of the residency is the preparation of the learner for independent practice as a geriatric psychiatrist.

Care of the elderly has become increasingly important across most branches of medicine and surgery. Delirium, dementia, frailty and the interplay between medical illness and mental disorders make this population’s needs particularly challenging.

Comprehensive training

In the Winnipeg region there are six geographically situated teams. These teams see patients in all community settings including nursing homes. Each team works with a geriatric psychiatrist.

Educational opportunities include weekly didactic seminars on various mental health topics that pertain to older adults as well as journal clubs throughout the year.

In addition, opportunities are had to join our colleagues during Geriatric Medicine Rounds as well as attend Baycrest Rounds virtually.

Rotations are carried out at Victoria General Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, Deer Lodge Centre and Riverview Health Centre.
