Fellowship details
Overview
The objective of the program is to provide additional focused training in kidney transplantation for those physicians who have completed a general adult nephrology residency program in Canada and wish to work as a transplant nephrologist in Canada.
This fellowship allows greater volume of exposure to clinical scenarios in all aspects of kidney transplantation from which they can develop the required independent skillset and competency level.
The fellowship structure was built to mirror a future professional practice during which the specialist would be expected to evaluate donor and recipient candidates, allocate kidneys and manage all early and late aspects of routine post-kidney transplant care.
Clinical training
The program is based at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and all inpatient and outpatient rotations occur there. However, we provide telephone advice for providers looking after kidney transplant patients all over Manitoba, Nunavut and northwestern Ontario.
Clinical fellows will do two four-week blocks on the inpatient ward rotation and two four-week blocks on the outpatient clinic rotation under the supervision of the attending physician assigned to that rotation.
In parallel to the above two rotations, fellows will be expected to participate in pre-kidney transplant assessment clinics, top of the list clinics, review to ready rounds and living donor assessment clinics, again under the supervision of an appropriate attending physician.
Electives and research
The remaining eight weeks of time will be considered elective time, which can be done locally or at another Canadian institution.
Some or all of this time may be used as research time, depending on the goals of the fellow, but this will require justification from the research supervisor.
Call responsibilities
On-call responsibilities will be home call one in four evenings and weekends.
