Dr. Mahmoud Torabi’s areas of research expertise are spatial statistics and small area estimation in the context of data science, with a focus on developing novel biostatistics methods for big data to improve the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and diverse populations.
Dr. Torabi's research interests include biostatistics, cluster detection, longitudinal data analysis, measurement errors, small area estimation, spatial epidemiology/models, and survival analysis, and his research contributions have been widely recognized, including in prestigious journals such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrics, and the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society.
As a research scientist at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), Dr. Torabi leads a team that is developing new models and techniques in the context of population health research to integrate generated knowledge into healthcare practice, which is fundamental to the health and well-being of the population. He has also accepted graduate students for master’s and PhD programs.
Dr. Torabi has made significant contributions to research on diseases such as asthma, colorectal cancer, COVID-19, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), influenza, leukemia, lung cancer, sexually transmitted disease (STD), and tuberculosis, and he is highly respected in his field, having served the Statistical Society of Canada in various capacities and having been president of the survey methods section in 2018. His work has been recognized through invitations to present at conferences and workshops across the globe.

Biography
Dr. Mahmoud Torabi is a distinguished academician and researcher, serving as a full professor in community health sciences at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He also holds an adjunct professorship at the department of statistics. With his extensive experience in the field of biostatistics, Dr. Torabi has made significant contributions to the development of novel biostatistics models and methods to address health issues related to communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Torabi earned his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in statistics from the National University of Iran, followed by a PhD in statistics from Carleton University, where he received the University Medal for the Best Doctoral Dissertation. His PhD thesis research focused on small area estimation, a subject he has continued to work on throughout his career.
