Neuro Anesthesia Fellowship

The University of Manitoba offers graduate anesthesiologists the exciting opportunity to enhance their skills through a one-year Neuro Anesthesia Fellowship, based out of Winnipeg’s prestigious Health Sciences Centre. Fellowship details

This flexible program provides training in the perioperative management of patients undergoing neurological surgery, along with extensive clinical experience in all areas of neurosurgery including vascular, oncology, stereotactic, spinal, trauma and interventional neuroradiology. As the only neurosurgical unit in Manitoba, UM performs hundreds of neuro-surgical and neuor-interventional procedures each year.

As a neuro anesthesia fellow, your primary responsibility is to provide expert neuro-anesthetic care to neurosurgery patients. As your abilities and expertise levels increase, so will your autonomy.

Diverse training opportunities

Training includes access to the full spectrum of simulation-based learning, including three fully functional critical care rooms, in our clinical learning and simulation facility.

Access to the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine (KIAM), a facility committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of disease With a focus on neurosciences, infectious diseases, advanced imaging and medical informatics, the KIAM features state-of-the-art tools and technology such as intraoperative PET, MRI and Angiography, IMRIS image-guided therapy system, and an infectious disease ICU.

Supported by strong perioperative medicine and ICU programs, the Neuro Anesthesia program encourages opportunities for external electives.

Program structure

Over the course of 12 consecutive months—which includes four weeks of holiday time—your course of study consists of 48 weeks of clinical, research and approved elective time. In the first half of your fellowship all of your Neuro Anesthesia time will be supervised; in the second half, you’ll be expected to do a portion of that time independently.

For the purposes of confirmation of completion and associated credentials, time spent in approved off-service electives may be credited toward the fellowship, proportionately reducing the required time spent in core commitments.

Research opportunities

This program offers ample opportunity for clinical research, either in an existing project or an original one, in the areas of neuro anesthesia, basic neurophysiology or pharmacology.

Admission and application requirements

Application deadline: September 30

To apply for the fellowship program, you must have:

  • Successfully completed an anesthesia residency program
  • Passed, or meet the requirements to be eligible to sit, the exams of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and
  • Obtained a license to practice independent anesthesia in Manitoba

Interviews will be offered to select applicants pending the evaluation of application materials. The University of Manitoba Fellowship Selection Committee will accept one or more candidates into the fellowship program following the interview.

Your application to the fellowship program must include: 

  • Letter of intent 
  • Current curriculum vitae 
  • Certificate of completion for your specialty training 
  • Names and contact information of three references 
  • Anesthesia fellowship application questionnaire (PDF)
  • English language requirement IELTS (academic module). Required to have an overall band score of 7 with a minimum score of 7 in each component (only 1 assessment result is required) (IMG only)
  • Occupational English Test-Medicine (OET-Medicine), with a minimum grade of B in each of the four subsets in the same sitting or
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program-General (CELPIP-General) Test, with a minimum score of 9 in each of the four skills in the same sitting.
