The Libraries are responsible for collecting, preserving and providing access to graduate theses completed by UM students. For the purposes of these guidelines, the term "thesis" refers to any thesis, dissertation, or practicum submitted by students to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in fulfilment of graduate level degree requirements at the University of Manitoba.

For information on thesis submission see: Thesis and practicum examinations and MSpace submission.

Access and holdings

As of September 2014, the UM requires submission of digital copies of theses. UM digital theses are housed in MSpace, the UM’s institutional repository. Most older theses, not previously submitted to MSpace, have been retrospectively digitized and are preserved there. A small number of theses are only available in print or on microfiche. Print copies of theses that have not been digitized are available for loan. Theses that have been converted to microfiche are housed at the University of Manitoba Archives and the Elizabeth Dafoe Library. Library staff are available to help with obtaining these items. UM theses are listed in the following searchable resources:

  • Google Scholar
  • MSpace (1950 – current)
  • The University of Manitoba Libraries catalogue
  • Theses Canada – Library & Archives Canada (1905 to present)
  • Dissertations & Theses - Web of Science (1943-2014)

Metadata from UM theses may be harvested by other sites such as the NLDTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations).
