Indigenous voices

The IJII is also a home for Indigenous perspectives. For far too long, Indigenous voices have largely been excluded from academia. The consequence of which is that Canadian laws, policies, and regulations have had an adverse effect, not only on Indigenous cultures, but also on their social, political, and economic agency. Thus, by providing a platform where Indigenous voices and their allies can be heard, it is hoped that significant policy changes can take place. It is our hope that in this way, our journal will encourage a more respectful and equitable society.

Place-based journal

Finally, the IJII is a place-based journal. We are located within the University of Manitoba, which was founded on Treaty #1 territory in what is now Canada. The University was founded in the 6th year of the Treaty. We recognize that our place of work is the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe, Cree, OjiCree, Dakota, Dene, and Métis peoples. The word ‘Inaakonigewin’ means ‘law’ in Anishinaabemowin, so our use of it is a reflection of who we are, where we come from, and what we are about. While we accept submissions from all territories and nations, our primary interest and focus is on Manitoba and the prairies region.
