Request time with an IST technical representative to discuss storage needs to determine which option is best suited for your research storage. Some requests may require you to consult directly with other university departments, such as the Office of Research Ethics and Compliance, the Access and Privacy Office and Information Security and Compliance.
Cost
This initial consultation service is free. The provisioning of any services resulting from the consultation is fee-based.
IST rates for storage are reviewed annually and subject to annual price adjustments. You should expect an annual rate increase of 3-3.5%. Please budget accordingly.
All cost estimates are valid for 90 days from the date completed.
If you require a cost estimate for the purposes of an application for a research grant, please include this in the request.

- Must be for the purposes of research conducted at or on behalf of the University of Manitoba.

Request provisioning Capacity Disk
Request provisioning a Capacity Disk
Capacity Disk storage is a pool of low-speed storage that will hold data either mapped to one or more shared drives or exposed to a virtual machine to act as file storage.
Capacity Disk storage is typically used for “passive” data. Passive data is neither used nor updated or read frequently. Passive data is usually used for analytical and statistical purposes or in exceptional situations where specific investigations require this data.
Backup and archiving for Capacity Disk Storage are available for an additional cost. Features include:
- Twice daily shadow copies (Self Service user recovery)
- Nightly backup
- Retention of files for up to 1 Year
- Offsite backup sent to 3rd party vendor “Iron Mountain.”
Cost
This service is fee-based. You should expect an annual rate increase of 3-3.5%. Please budget accordingly.
Cost details:
- Capacity Disk – $0.25/GB/year – No backup/no archive
- Capacity Disk – $0.75/GB/year – Backup/archive

- Must have approved research funding. FOAP must be provided.

Request provisioning Performance Disk
Request provisioning a Performance Disk
Performance Disk storage is a pool of high-speed storage that will hold data exposed to a virtual machine to act as file storage.
Performance disk storage is typically used for “active” data. Active data is accessed frequently and is in constant use in applications. Performance is important at this layer of tiered storage.
Backup and archiving for Performance Disk storage is required and included in the rate. Features include:
- Twice daily shadow copies (Self Service user recovery)
- Nightly backup
- Retention of files up to 1 Year
- Offsite backup sent to 3rd party vendor “Iron Mountain”
Cost
This service is fee based. You should expect an annual rate increase of 3-3.5%. Please budget accordingly.

- Performance Disk – $0.50/GB/year – No backup /no archive
- Performance Disk – $1.00/GB/year – with backup/archive
- Additional costs may be required for virtual machine setup and support as outlined in the service offering Research Dedicated Compute (Virtual Servers)
