Research Interests

Dr. Berkes has devoted most of his professional life to investigating the relations between societies and their resources, and to examining the conditions under which the “tragedy of the commons” may be avoided. He works on theoretical and practical aspects of commons and community-based management, traditional ecological knowledge (Indigenous knowledge), and social-ecological resilience. He held Tier I Canada Research Chair in Community-based Resource Management from 2002 to 2016 (https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca). In 2016, he became Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He is not taking any new graduate students, but he is available for thesis committees.
