Dr. Berkes has devoted most of his professional life to investigating the relations between societies and their resources, and to examining the conditions under which the “tragedy of the commons” may be avoided. He works on theoretical and practical aspects of commons and community-based management, traditional ecological knowledge (Indigenous knowledge), and social-ecological resilience. He was appointed Tier I Canada Research Chair in Community-based Resource Management, awarded in 2002 and renewed in 2009 (http://www.chairs.gc.ca).
