Research Interests
My research area is in remote sensing, sensor technologies, and applications in Arctic Science. In remote sensing, we are interested in observing and understanding the conditions of our target of interest without being in physical contact with it. For my research, I focus on a range of topics, from engineering system and antenna design to scientific use and analysis of satellite data.
My team conducts experiments on sea ice remote sensing at multiple scales. This ranges from small-scale studies using radars to monitor sea ice conditions at the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF) on the University of Manitoba campus, to large-scale research from ships in the Arctic and satellite data acquisition over Northern Canada. The small-scale studies give us detailed information on how changes in ice conditions affect our radar measurement and then we use these results to interpret changes in sea ice at the large scale.
My research projects have included remote sensing experimentation, design of antennas and sensors, satellite hardware development, and satellite imagery interpretation. Applications have included developing methods for detecting oil spills in sea ice environments, numerical modelling techniques, and improving satellite-based sea ice classification using machine learning.
