Dr. Gerald Walton

About the lecture: Think queer activism is just for queer people? Think again. In Canada, ever-shifting political contexts have made the co-conspiracy of cisgender and straight people with queer people perfectly urgent. Surpassing mere allyship, 'cis-het' people can—and should—step up with queer communities in resistance to anti-queer discrimination that has flourished over the past few years. Gerald Walton, Professor at Lakehead University and editor of The Gay Agenda: Claiming Space, Identity, and Justice, argues that bold, united activism is key to confronting rising repression and authoritarianism.

About Dr. Gerald Walton: A sociologist by training, the focus of Gerald Walton's research, teaching, and activism is exploring privilege in ways that support equity for marginalized groups of people in society. He identifies himself as an insider and outsider at the same time, drawing on both for activism toward social and institutional change.   Winner of teaching and mentorship awards and recognized for his scholarship on bullying, Walton also co-authored the 2021 book, Being boys: Shaping gender norms to weaken rape culture
