Dr. Amir Michalovich joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of Literacies Education in January 2024. He is a literacies scholar with expertise in digital and multimodal literacies. He obtained his PhD from UBC. There, he explored possibilities for language and literacy learning through digital multimodal composing, specifically video production, with newcomer youth from refugee and socio-economically marginalized backgrounds in a secondary school in Metro Vancouver. Building on his doctoral and postdoctoral research, he is currently exploring teachers' perceptions, practices, and challenges in using digital multimodal composing in the context of newcomer students' learning in Manitoba. Amir previously worked as a filmmaker, spanning video and sound editing, producing, screenwriting, and directing, as well as mentoring community-based filmmaking groups (youth and adults) in Tel Aviv and Greater Vancouver. He also managed a nationwide education research project to introduce a new multilingual education policy in Israel, where he previously worked as an English as a Foreign Language teacher in a secondary school. His research and teaching also encompass critical media literacy, computer-assisted and multimodal qualitative data analysis, arts-based research, and classroom interaction.
