This class will focus on themes of sustainability, ingenuity and creative experimentation.  This workshop will focus largely on the process of seeking out nature-based or second-hand materials and reimagining how to use those materials for the purpose of art-making. Throughout this class, students will have the opportunity to experiment with mixed media, textiles, and sculptural work. Most of the materials in this class will be sourced from nature or recycled.  

Class topics include:

  • natural dying and ink making
  • nature-based mobiles
  • recycled animal sculptures
  • repurposed fashion design

Materials Required by individual students:

  • Scissors
  • One or two used/unwanted clothing items for repurposing 
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Cleaned, recyclable materials from home (such as used pop-bottles, plastic, cardboard, egg cartons etc.) 
  • Reusable shopping bag for foraging
  • Gardening gloves/any type of gloves

 

  • Meet the instructor:

    Gabrielle Funk is a Winnipeg-based visual artist, muralist and community art facilitator. She specializes in realism using two-dimensional mediums such as acrylic, watercolour and ink. Her work often amalgamates symbols related to themes of nature, mythology and the feminine experience. During the school year Gabrielle's illustrations are published weekly in The Uniter Urban Journal. Furthermore, various works of her public art can be found in locations around Winnipeg. In addition to her studio practice, Gabrielle works as a freelance art instructor and program coordinator for Art City Inc.
     
    Gabrielle is passionate about exploring the ways in which creativity can be used as a method to learn about the self, build confidence and strengthen communities. She believes that there is an artist inside of everyone and loves helping people discover and explore those aspects of themselves.
