The Music of Mary Lou Williams and Gil Evans

The University of Manitoba Jazz Orchestra presents music by two influential jazz composers and arrangers, Mary Lou Williams and Gil Evans. The program will feature selections from Aries, Yardbird Suite, Walkin’ and Swingin’, Blues for Pablo, What’s Your Story, Morning Glory? and King Porter Stomp.
Guest Lecture: Piano Teaching Tricks I have Learned Over the Years

John Burge had some fine piano teachers growing up in Calgary, Alberta and later at the University of Toronto. Even more importantly, he observed some great teachers working with his son in both private studio settings and as a master class participant. In a lively presentation, John will share and demonstrate the best of these memories at the piano. While the focus will be on teaching the piano, musical pedagogy is sufficiently expansive that all music teachers should find resonance—and even a few laughs—in the ideas presented.
Celebrating the Canadian League of Composers 75th Anniversary in 2026 with a Solo Piano Recital

In celebration of the Canadian League of Composers 75th Anniversary in 2026, composer and pianist, John Burge presents a solo piano recital of music composed by many of the CLC past presidents. Starting with music by founding President, John Weinzweig, the program proceeds chronologically to current president, Tyler Versluis. The concert opens with a musical land acknowledgement, “Prairie Crocus,” composed by Indigenous-Canadian composer and CLC member, Beverley McKiver, and concludes with a rousing collective singing of O Canada.
