Canada’s premiere coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl has appeared with such opera houses at Teatro all Scala (Milan) and the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), the Metropolitan Opera (NYC), San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Calgary Opera and the Manitoba Opera. From her roots in musical theatre to concert halls, Ms. Dahl has been lauded for her silvery tone, her vocal agility and her acting prowess in comedy or tragedy.

In the faculty

Education

Ms. Dahl pursued her vocal training at the Banff School of Fine Arts, studying Musical Theatre, Art Song and Opera. This where she met and became a private student of renowned soprano and vocal pedagogue Mary Morrison, O.C., of the University of Toronto. Dahl also was a participant in the Merola Opera program in San Francisco.

Performance highlights

Frequent and favourite roles are Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Marie in La Fille du Régiment, Cunegonde in Candide, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Norina in Don Pasquale and Madame Mao in Nixon in China, which she has recorded on the Naxos label. Some of her most frequently performed works are Carmina Burana, Brahms’ Requiem, Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate, and an American program of Gershwin and Bernstein and Gilbert and Sullivan. Her recordings for CBC Records are Glitter and Be Gay; A Gilbert and Sullivan Gala, Rhymes and Reveries, as well as Love Walked In, a Gershwin tribute with Bramwell Tovey.

Recent engagements include performances with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s 4th Symphony, Carmina Burana and Bramwell Tovey’s Farewell Concert. In 2018, she sang the role of Cunegonde (Candide) with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She also sang Carmina Burana with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. She was delighted to return to the stage with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in its 2018/19 season in an all Mozart concert. In 2019, Dahl returned to the Canadian Opera Company to reprise her role as Despina in Così Fan Tutti and opened the season for the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

Awards

  • 2017: Member of the Order of Canada, awarded for her performing career and her work mentoring and teaching the next generation of singers.
  • 2009 and 2017: Nominated for the Betty Mitchell Award for Best Actress in a musical or opera: Adele in Die Fledermaus, and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos
  • 2014: Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women
  • 2010: Ruby Award from Opera Canada
  • 2008: Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Actress in a musical or opera: Gilda in Rigoletto
  • Juno Award Nominations for: Glitter and Be Gay (CBC Records), Rhymes and Reveries (CBC Records), and The Millennium Gala (CBC Records)

 

Ongoing research and creative works

Dahl has been voice teacher at the Desautels Faculty of Music since 1997. She has been resident Voice Instructor for Calgary Opera’s Young Artist Program since 2005 and has taught at San Francisco Opera’s Merola and Adler programs. She has given Masterclasses across Canada and the United States and regularly adjudicates Metropolitan Opera auditions. Dahl has been active in her community as a fundraiser to support charities, arts organizations and school music programs. A breast cancer survivor, Dahl captains a team that participates in the CIBC Run for the Cure. Over the past 7 years with her team has raised over $60,000 for The Canadian Cancer Society.
