Known for his versatility on both upright bass and electric bass, Karl Kohut has performed with numerous Grammy, Juno and GMA award-winning artists, and has toured throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. As an educator, Kohut strives to connect with each student’s individual learning style to ensure a technically sound and historically informed approach, while helping them to realize their own voice and identity within the continuum of the jazz art form.
In the faculty
Kohut has appeared in concert with many renowned jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, George Colligan, Brad Turner, Quincy Davis, Ralph Peterson Jr., Terreon Gully, Jimmy Greene, Rossano Sportiello, and many more. As a member of Joe Doubleday & Felix Peikli’s Showtime Band, Kohut toured throughout the US and Europe, and their collaboration is documented on the album It’s Showtime: Live! (released in 2018). He has performed at many of North America’s major jazz clubs including Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Blue Note Jazz Club, Smalls, Zinc Bar, 55 Bar, Frankie’s, and The Jazz Corner. Kohut maintains an active schedule, performing and recording locally, nationally, and internationally. He is in the process of compiling several volumes of transcriptions which document and analyze the playing styles of a number of contemporary icons of jazz bass. Kohut also co-leads a group along with vocalist Karly Epp, which has performed in venues throughout New York City as well as in Winnipeg.
