Research summary

Our group is working on neuro-immune and endocrine mechanisms that contribute to the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. Our research program aims to elucidate the role of chromogranin-derived peptides, the autonomic nervous system, and central disorders during gastrointestinal inflammation development and to elucidate the precise mechanisms involved. This may lead to identifying new specific agents that will open new therapeutic avenues for treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Biography

Dr. Ghia is the director of Gastrointestinal Basic Biology Research at the Manitoba IBD clinical research center, where he heads a multidisciplinary team that performs basic IBD research to accelerate the development of IBD therapeutics. Using his CFI grant, he has built a local translational IBD research program by establishing his neurogastroenterology lab, which tests novel colitis prevention strategies and provides resources (i.e. colonoscopy, USSING) for other laboratories.

His research network and program have allowed him to led significant clinical collaborative works. His trainees have received an additional $300,000 in scholarships and other awards while in his lab. He has given over 52 invited lectures at Universities, scientific conferences, and industries and public forums. He co-organized several conference and symposium.

Dr. Ghia is a member of several national and international scientific panels. He is currently the chair of the Department of immunology External Communication & Outreach and the undergraduate education committees.

Since 2015, Dr. Ghia does scientific popularization via a bi-monthly segment on the French CBC radio RadioCanada première, segment called “des éprouvettes et des Hommes” and on TV with a segment called "Qu'est ce qu'on cherche?".

In March 2020, he participated, as a scientific director and writer, to launch the two first inaugural issue of the bilingual magazine "Science Mag junior" published by the Journal LaLiberté. Issues dedicated to explaining to kids the COVID-19.
