Research summary

Dr. Robert Tate has been integral to the Manitoba Follow-up Study (MFUS) since 1975, when he joined as a junior computer programmer. Initially launched in 1948 at the University of Manitoba, MFUS originated as a prospective cohort study examining the cardiovascular health of 3,983 young male RCAF aircrew recruits from World War II. Over the years, Dr. Tate's roles within MFUS have evolved, encompassing positions such as database developer, programmer analyst, doctoral student, research associate, and currently, director.

The scope of MFUS has broadened significantly, transitioning from its initial focus on cardiovascular disease to encompass the epidemiology of various chronic conditions, inquiries into healthy aging, and investigations into end-of-life functional trajectories.

Biography

Dr. Robert Tate serves as a senior scholar in community health sciences at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. Additionally, he holds the position of director at MFUS, overseeing Canada’s longest-running prospective study on cardiovascular disease and aging.

His academic journey commenced with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Winnipeg in 1973, followed by a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Manitoba in 1975. Joining the Faculty of Medicine at the same university, he began his career as a biostatistician with the Manitoba Follow-up Study.

Twenty-five years later, Dr. Tate achieved his PhD in cardiovascular epidemiology, marking a transition to an academic appointment as a senior scholar in community health sciences.

While his primary research focus remains within this longstanding study, Dr. Tate has forged collaborations with numerous local, national, and international health researchers.

His contributions extend to over 170 peer-reviewed publications across various disciplines, including health policy, general medicine, epidemiology, cardiovascular disease, and gerontology. More than 50 of these publications stem from research conducted at MFUS, co-authored with his staff, students, and co-investigators.

Currently relieved of classroom teaching and administrative duties, he maintains an active research program as the director of MFUS.
