Research summary

Dr. Chase research area includes applied occupational and environmental health research.

Since 2010, he has principally focused on Life Story Board (LSB) as a practical tool designed for counsellors and therapists and for use by social and health researchers.

Research projects that used LSB as the mode of interview have led to several peer-reviewed publications and student dissertations.

He provides LSB training and support with two published clinical studies of LSB used by Winnipeg high school counsellors with English as an additional language students and counsellors in a multicultural wellness program in Winnipeg with newcomer clients with trauma.

His current work involves training addiction rehabilitation counsellors.

Dr. Robert Chase is an assistant professor in community health sciences in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences University of Manitoba and is occupational health physician at the MFL Occupational Health Centre in Winnipeg.

He teaches undergraduate medical education in immigrant refugee and global health and supervises community health sciences graduate students.

Dr. Chase was part of the 1991 International Study Team’s independent nation-wide multi-stage household survey that determined effects of the Gulf War on infant and child mortality in Iraq and evidence of war crimes (NEJM 1992; 327:931-936).

Subsequent work out of McMaster University (1993-1996) on the health of children in war zones in several countries including child mental health survey research in Sri Lanka that led to a second phase ‘health initiative as peace initiative’ of an arts-based program for affected children.

Out of this he developed a visual narrative interview tool for children in difficult circumstances that was further refined in collaborative project work with NGOs in Western China Cambodia Uganda and with mental health and counselling professionals and organizations in Canada.
