Research summary

Dr. Krista Hardy’s active research program is based on the following pillars:

  • Perioperative optimization of bariatric outcomes – including fitness and nutritional outcomes; geography/access to care; family physician experience; sleep apnea; virtual care
  • Predictors of bariatric surgery outcomes – including factors predicting length of stay; bariatric biomarker profiles; geography and Indigenous status
  • Indigenous bariatric surgery – this foundational work explores Indigenous experience with bariatric surgery in order to better incorporate Indigenous approaches to wellness in bariatric care
  • Acute care surgery outcomes – measuring outcomes of organized acute care surgery services including efficiency and quality of care.

Biography

  • Dr. Hardy completed general surgery residency at UM followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Toronto.

    Her research training involved a master’s degree in surgery at UM during surgical residency.

    She has continued to build her research skills through participation in various activities within the surgery department, including as general surgery research director and a member of several committees (research advisory committee, clinician investigator program committee, surgery education advisory committee).

    She is also the department of surgery graduate chair for the Faculty of Graduate Studies and research lead at the Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

    She actively supervises undergraduate students, medical students, surgical residents, surgical fellows and master’s students in their research activities.
