Research summary

As part of the CARA group, Dr. Adam, in partnership with Dr. Zhanel, oversees a number of national surveillance studies designed to assess the epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of pathogens isolated from patients receiving care in tertiary care hospitals across Canada. Heather is particularly interested in Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the impact current vaccines have on the epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections in Canada.

Biography

Dr. Adam is an assistant professor in the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.

In 2009, Dr. Adam joined Diagnostic Services of Manitoba, now Shared Health, as a clinical microbiologist, sited at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

She is currently the section lead for mycobacteriology within the microbiology discipline.

She chairs the Fellows of the Canadian College of Microbiologists standing committee, which is responsible for the accreditation of training programs and examination process for certification of Clinical Microbiologists in Canada.

Dr. Adam is actively involved in research as part of the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Alliance (CARA) group, which is led by Dr. George Zhanel.

She has a significant publication record with more than 100 published manuscripts and has had the opportunity to present hundreds of conference presentations.
