Dr. Grant Hatch's laboratory at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) is uncovering new insights into the regulation of cardiolipin metabolism in the heart and mitochondria. By studying the biosynthesis and remodeling of this essential phospholipid in the context of Barth Syndrome, a childhood X-linked genetic disease, and chronic diseases such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes, the team is gaining a deeper understanding of how cardiolipin plays a critical role in the health and disease of these vital organelles.

Biology of Cardiolipin Metabolism
Dr. Grant Hatch is a highly respected researcher in the field of lipid biochemistry, with a broad background in the identification, purification, and characterization of key enzymes involved in cardiolipin metabolism. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cardiolipin Metabolism, and is the PI on several national funded grants in Canada.
Dr. Hatch received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Winnipeg in 1981. He then went on to earn a Master of Science in biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan in 1986, and a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Manitoba in 1989. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in biochemistry at the University of Alberta between 1989 and 1992.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hatch has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to scholarship and research. He was awarded the Yves Marcel Established Investigator Award at the Canadian Vascular and Lipid Summit in 2020, and held the prestigious Tier I Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cardiolipin Metabolism from 2006 to 2020. He also received the Presidential Outreach Award from the University of Manitoba in 2003 and Merit Awards from UM in 2000 and 2016. In addition, he was a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Scientist from 2000-2005, a Rh Award for Outstanding Contributions to Scholarship and Research in the Health Sciences from UM in 1997 and Center on Aging, UM Research Fellowship in 1997. He was also a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Scholar from 1994-1999 and Manitoba Health Research Council Scholar from 1992-1994.
Dr. Hatch has a proven track record of successfully administering projects, fruitfully collaborating with other researchers, and producing many high-quality peer-reviewed publications and reviews. His work has helped to attract and train high-quality personnel and has uncovered many novel facets of cardiolipin biology.
