Research summary

Dr. Donna Turner's research interests are centered around population-based cancer data as a means of informing cancer control activities. She has conducted numerous cancer epidemiology projects based on the provincial cancer registry and linked administrative databases, and her primary research focus involves population-based health services research in cancer. Dr. Turner is affiliated with numerous research groups and organizations related to cancer, including the Canadian Cancer Society, the International Association of Cancer Registries, and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. As the provincial director of the population oncology portfolio at CancerCare Manitoba, she oversees several programs related to epidemiology, prevention and screening, system performance, quality, patient safety, and policies and guidelines. Dr. Turner is currently accepting both Master's and PhD students in her research program.

Biography

Dr. Donna Turner is an associate professor in the community health sciences department of the Max Rady College of Medicine.

Dr. Turner received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Alberta in 1997, and her master of science in community health sciences with a focus on epidemiology from the University of Calgary in 1991. She earned her bachelor of science in health information science from the University of Victoria in 1988.

Dr. Turner's career in cancer research began in 1999 when she joined CancerCare Manitoba as an epidemiologist after completing her post-doctoral fellowship with the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. 

She has been the provincial director of the population oncology portfolio at CancerCare Manitoba since 2007. Her portfolio is comprised of several programs:

  • Epidemiology
  • Manitoba Cancer Registry
  • CancerCare Manitoba’s prevention and screening programs (including BreastCheck, CervixCheck and ColonCheck)
  • System Performance team
  • Department of Quality
  • Patient safety
  • Policies and guidelines
