Research summary

Dr. Fleisher has many ongoing professional, scholarly and research interests, which include child and adolescent psychiatry, medical education, the psychotherapies, medical leadership and mentorship, and the development of critical, systemic thinking in clinical and academic work. He values being in collaborative relationships with both colleagues and learners.

Biography

Dr. Wil Fleisher is a professor of psychiatry in the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

He is also a member and fellow of both the American and Canadian Psychiatric Associations, and a member of both the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Canadian Association for Medical Education. Dr. Fleisher has served as an examiner and a member of the psychiatry test committee for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

A native Winnipegger, he entered the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine in 1970, and proceeded to do a mixed internship at the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1974- 1975. His first professional calling was to general medicine, which included professional work in rural and indigenous settings. He worked at the Health Sciences primary health care unit, Klinic and Mount Carmel Clinic, as well as having a community-based general medicine private practice in Winnipeg.

In 1986, he returned to the faculty to complete postgraduate training in psychiatry.

He was the program director for postgraduate education in psychiatry, and subsequently completed two five-year terms as the associate dean for Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) (2000-2005) and associate dean, medical education (2005-2010). He is currently the director, academic affairs for psychiatry.
