Research Summary

Dr. Geert 't Jong is a clinical pharmacologist and pediatrician with a research focus on pharmacology in pediatrics, including pharmaco-epidemiology and clinical trials.

He is the former director of the Clinical Research Unit (Research Services Unit) at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba and conducts independent research as well as industry trials.

Dr. 't Jong holds several leadership roles on a national and international level, including past chair of The Drug Regulatory Outcomes community of ASCPT and Chair of the Drug Therapy and Hazardous Substances Committee of the Canadian Pediatric Society.

He is also actively involved with KidSCAN Trials and MICYRN, and holds local and national grants in pediatric clinical research.

His research interests include pediatric pharmacotherapy and pharmacoepidemiology, pediatric hospital medicine, cannabis, and clinical trials.

Dr. 't Jong is affiliated with the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba and is a part of various research groups such as the Pharmacology Lab, KidsCAN Trials, Canadian Pharmacogenomics Network for Drug Safety, Canadian Children Cannabis Clinical Trials, Paediatric Inpatient Research Network, and the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Community.

Biography

Dr. Geert 't Jong is a highly accomplished pediatrician and clinical pharmacologist. He has spent his career dedicated to improving the lives of children through his work as a clinician scientist at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). In this role, he runs the clinical research unit of CHRIM and works as a hospitalist and ambulatory pediatrician in the Children's Hospital - Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg.

Dr. 't Jong's journey to becoming a leading expert in his field began at Erasmus University Medical School in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he completed a combined MD-PhD program. His PhD thesis focused on off-label drug use in children, providing valuable insight into the extent and impact of this issue in various levels of pediatric care.

Following his graduation, Dr. 't Jong started his residency in pediatrics at Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam, where he continued to be involved in research, conducting studies on large health care databases in the Netherlands. In 2010, he became a clinical fellow in clinical pharmacology at SickKids Hospital (University of Toronto) under the supervision of Dr. Shinya Ito, training as a pediatric clinical pharmacologist and conducting studies looking at the effects of genetics on drug metabolism.

In September 2012, Dr. 't Jong started his current job at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. He runs several research projects about pediatric pharmacology, and epidemiology, and was the director of the clinical research unit until late 2019. He currently is the associate head of the department of pediatrics and child health, and is head of the section of pediatric hospital medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. 't Jong has received numerous awards and recognition, including the ASPCT Presidential Trainee Award (2012, 2013) and Jan Molenaar Prize for best presentation in English (2000).  

Dr. 't Jong's commitment to advancing pediatric care through research and his dedication to his patients make him a respected leader in the field of pediatrics and clinical pharmacology.
