He is also a leading researcher in the field of gestational diabetes, working to investigate and prevent this condition in Indigenous and urban communities through educational and lifestyle interventions.

Dr. Shen's research program is wide-ranging, with a focus on basic sciences, clinical sciences, and public and community health. He has a particular interest in understanding the role of the microbiome and metabolomics in diabetes, and has been at the forefront of research investigating the use of Saskatoon berry and wild rice in nutritional interventions for diabetes.

Dr. Shen's research has received close to 20 million dollars of funding, and has generated over 140 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals such as Diabetes Care, Diabetes, Lancet EClin Med, Br Med J, JAMA Pediatrics, and Endocrinology. Biography

Dr. Garry Shen is a renowned expert in the field of diabetic cardiovascular complications, with a particular focus on endothelial cell biology and the development of nutritional remedies for the prevention and control of diabetes. He is a professor in internal medicine at the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, where he also holds cross-appointments in physiology and pathophysiology, and food and human nutritional sciences.

Dr. Shen began his educational journey by obtaining his medical doctorate and PhD from Shanghai Second Medical University (now known as Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine) in 1985. He then went on to receive research training at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, including the University of Iowa, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University of Alberta and Harvard University. In 1991, he joined the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, where he has been a key figure in the advancement of diabetes research ever since.

Dr. Shen is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of medical researchers. He has trained numerous graduate students, BSc (Med.) students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical residents in medical research, and has developed his research programs with the efforts of his trainees and collaborations from his colleagues. He is also actively involved in community health research, working with partners and participants to improve the health of Indigenous communities.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shen has received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including the Shanghai Health Bureau's Award for Medical Research in 1985, the Alberta Heritage Foundation's Medical Research Award Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1989-91, the Canadian Lipoprotein Conference's New Investigator Award in 1997, and the Joslin Diabetes Center's Harvard University Iacocca Visiting Scientist Award in 2001.
