Research summary

Dr. Menec’s research focuses primarily on older adults. Her interests lie in the areas of social determinants of healthy aging, social inclusion (e.g., social isolation and loneliness, which are major health risks), and age-friendly communities as a way to promote healthy aging. An emphasis is community-based research in partnership with community organizations.

Biography

Dr. Verena Menec is a professor in community health sciences at the University of Manitoba.

She has published extensively in the field of aging. She has served on many advisory committees, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Aging from 2005 to 2011, and the board of the Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG) from 2014-2020, first as chair of the social science division and subsequently as vice-president.

She received a distinguished member award for her contribution to CAG in 2020. She was the director of the Centre on Aging at the University of Manitoba from 2004 to 2014. She has been the recipient of numerous research grants (e.g., from SSHRC and CIHR), including a Canada Research Chair in Healthy Aging that she held from 2004-2014. She is the Manitoba site lead of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), the largest study on aging ever conducted in Canada that will follow approximately 50,000 men and women between the ages of 45 and 85 for at least 20 years.
