Research summary

Although his primary role is as a clinician educator, Dr. Wuerz is also a dedicated researcher with a focus on clinical infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and optimal antimicrobial use. He is a lead investigator for national and international multi-site clinical trials investigating therapeutic options for bacterial and viral infections, including S. aureus, C. difficile, and COVID-19. Dr. Wuerz is also committed to improving the quality of medical care through wiser antimicrobial use and more effective communication between health care providers and patients.

Biography

Dr. Terence Wuerz is an assistant professor in the departments of community health sciences and internal medicine (section of infectious diseases) at the University of Manitoba.

After completing his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Manitoba in 2007, Dr. Wuerz went on to complete a fellowship in internal medicine at Dalhousie University and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Manitoba. He also holds a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from the University of Alabama and a master of sciences in epidemiology from the University of London.

Dr. Wuerz began his medical career as an internist in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where he worked for three years. During this time, he gained expertise in the areas of tuberculosis, general infectious diseases, and tropical medicine. He later joined the faculty at the University of Manitoba, where he has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of medical care through wiser antimicrobial use and more effective communication between health care providers and patients.

Dr. Wuerz's research interests include the investigation of therapeutic options for bacterial and viral infections, including S. aureus, C. difficile, and COVID-19. He has served as a lead investigator for several national and international multi-site clinical trials and has published numerous articles in top-tier medical journals.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Wuerz is a dedicated member of the medical community, serving on the board of directors for the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety and leading a multidisciplinary working group to create an integrated clinical antimicrobial stewardship program within acute care hospitals in Winnipeg.
