How to make your work open access

  • Publish in a ‘fully’ open access journal or book platform
  • Archive a peer-reviewed version of your work in the University of Manitoba’s MSpace or another OA repository
  • Pay a publisher’s article processing charges to remove access restrictions/increase author rights – see categories below

Open access categories

To make decisions about what kind of model is presented, it is important to understand these designations. Such categories are most applied to journal publishers.

Open Access
Bronze category only allows free to read; both bronze and ‘traditional’ categories are too restrictive to meet funder mandates.

Article processing charges: Off-set options

OA fund

There is no fund available from the University or from the Libraries to provide financial assistance for article processing charges (APCs); however, some faculties do. Please contact the relevant person in your department to inquire.

Publisher discounts

The Libraries commitment to open access extends to institutional memberships and discounts with a variety of publishers and organizations. Such discounts are part of agreements obtained via consortia (Canadian Knowledge Research Network) or as an additional benefit of a membership structure.
