GIS Workshop Expectations
Our goal
We are dedicated to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and harassment-free workshop experience for everyone. We value diverse perspectives and believe that respectful dialogue across differences strengthens our learning community. All workshop participants—attendees, and organizers—are expected to abide by this code of conduct.
Expected behaviour
We ask all participants to:
- Be respectful. Value different ideas, perspectives, and viewpoints. Disagreement is natural, but it should never be an excuse for poor manners or personal attacks.
- Be inclusive. Use welcoming language and make space for others to contribute. Be mindful of those who may be less familiar with the topic or who face barriers to participation.
- Be collaborative. Approach discussions with curiosity and openness. Seek to understand before seeking to be understood.
- Be professional. Keep communication appropriate for a diverse audience that may include people from many different backgrounds and experiences.
- Be considerate. Respect people's time by adhering to the workshop schedule, minimizing disruptions, and staying on topic during discussions.
All participants in this workshop are expected to abide by the University’s Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy, and the Sexual Violence Policy.
For more information about the policies, you can contact the office of Human Rights and Conflict Management or visit their website.
Enforcement
Participants asked to stop any inappropriate behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
If a participant engages in behaviour that violates this code of conduct, workshop organizers may take any action deemed appropriate, including:
- Warning the individual
- Asking the individual to leave the workshop
- Pausing or ending the workshop early
- Banning the individual from future workshops
- Reporting the behaviour to relevant institutional authorities
Reporting
If you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour, please report it as soon as possible. You can:
- Speak directly with a workshop organizer or instructor
- Email us at umlgis@umanitoba.ca
Email the UM Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management at human.rights@umanitoba.ca
When you make a report, we will:
- Listen to your concerns respectfully and take them seriously
- Handle your report with discretion and confidentiality
- Not require you to confront anyone
- Take appropriate action to address the situation
We value your participation and want everyone to feel safe and welcome.
