“I chose to take a program in my community, because in 2019 I actually moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, which is five hours away from my hometown, and that was my first time learning about cultural shock. I was on my own over there. I had to get around on my own. I didn't have family. So when I heard that there was programs coming to our community, that was really exciting for me and for everyone. As for my experience at the Learning Hub, it was really great. We were provided with an in-person EA, Elder support, laptops, wi-fi, bus transportation and a comfortable, clean environment."

Kristy Mekish, a former student of the Learning Hub, presently the Learning Hub Coordinator Assistant:

“I chose to take a program in my community because in 2019 I actually moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, which is five hours away from my hometown, and that was my first time learning about cultural shock. I was on my own over there. I had to get around on my own. I didn't have family. When I moved away, I got bad anxiety, and that's something I didn't really have to deal with before then. So when I heard that there was programs coming to our community, that was really exciting for me and for everyone. So I took that opportunity to jump in there right away.

And for my experience at the Learning Hub, it was really great. We were provided with an in-person EA, Elder support, laptops, wi-fi, bus transportation, a comfortable, clean environment. Our Elder support - they helped us. If we had questions about school, if we wanted to talk about something personal, they would pull us aside and have positive advice or suggestions.

Having an in-person. EA was a big help, as we were doing online courses. They helped us with questions, and if we had assignments, if needed, they kept us on track with our due dates, and helped us sign into our students account accounts. It has been an honor helping and celebrating with my fellow community members. When I sit and talk with some students, I hear similar similar stories like to mine. I guess them like a lot of people in our community feel like they wouldn't accomplish anything because they were always scared to move out of community and move away from family. So being able to help them accomplish something is something I'm really honored to do. I'm really looking forward to future programs that we hold in our community and helping them succeed that way.”
