Research description

Dr. Tachie’s research has been devoted to experimental investigation of rough-wall turbulent boundary layers, separated and reattached turbulent flows, turbulent jets and free surface flows. His lab is equipped with state-of-the-art time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) systems, including stereoscopic PIV, tomographic PIV and particle tracking velocimetry.

Biography

Dr. Mark Tachie received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering with First Class from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, in 1993. He obtained his MSc and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan in 1998 and 2001, respectively, which he completed on University of Saskatchewan Fellowship and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship. He was the recipient of the Governor General Award, which is awarded for academic excellence to the student who achieves the highest academic standing at the graduate level, and the University of Saskatchewan Graduate Thesis Award in Physical and Engineering Sciences in recognition of outstanding contribution for his PhD thesis on Open Channel Turbulent Boundary Layers and Wall Jets on Rough Surfaces. He was an NSERC post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto in 2001. Dr. Tachie was appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba in 2001, and was promoted to Associate Professor and Full Professor in 2005 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Tachie is an internationally recognized expert in the field of turbulent shear flows. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers in journals and conferences. He was the recipient of the 2010 Rh Award for his outstanding contributions in scholarship and research in the Applied Sciences, and the University of Manitoba nominee for NSERC’s E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships in 2011 and 2012. Dr. Tachie is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba. He was an Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Fluid Engineering from 2010 to 2017, the Department of Mechanical Engineering Associate Head (Graduate Programs) from 2011 to 2019, and Acting Head from 2016 to 2017.
