Research description

Dr. Carl Ho has made significant contributions through his research on Power Electronics (PE) based power apparatuses. He has over 10 years of experience researching in the area of power electronics in industry. He managed projects that developed Solar inverter technologies when he was a Principal Scientist at ABB Switzerland. These studies determined the suitable controls, topology and power semiconductors for the single phase and three phase PV products made by ABB. These projects encompassed full power testing and benchmarking of commercial PV inverters and concluded with a full power evaluation of engineering prototypes that used technologies invented by his team. In 2014, he was appointed as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Efficient Utilization of Electric Power to perform research on Renewable Energy, Smart Grids, real time simulations, heavy electric vehicles and issues of Power Quality. He received the Second Place Winner for 2018 Prize Paper Awards of the IEEE Trans. On Power Electronics based on his research outputs. He has a wealth of industrial and academic experience, and has been invited to give presentations at various conferences, including the keynote talk at the International Conference on Smart Energy Grid Engineering in 2019. He has published more than 40 IEEE Journals, 80 IEEE conference papers and filed more than 20 patents.

Biography

Dr. Carl Ho received his BEng and MEng double degrees and PhD degree in electronic engineering at the City University of Hong Kong in 2002 and 2007, respectively. His PhD research was focused on dynamic voltage regulation and restoration technology for power quality and energy saving issues.

In 2007-2014, he has been at ABB Switzerland Ltd., Switzerland, and was appointed different positions, including Scientist, Principal Scientist, and the last position was R&D Principal Engineer. At ABB, he has led an international research project team to develop solar inverter technologies. In October 2014, he joined University of Manitoba, currently he is Full Professor and Canada Research Chair in Efficient Utilization of Electric Power. In July 2021, he was appointed as Associate Head (Electrical Engineering) of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Manitoba.

Dr. Ho is an IEEE Senior Member and serves as an Associate Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems (JETCAS), Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL) and IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE). He received the Second Place Winner for 2018 Prize Paper Awards of TPEL and he was the recipient of the Associate Editor Awards of JESTPE in 2018, 2019 and 2021. And his leading project team Winnie the Power received Best Student Team Regional Award of the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives 2019 competition in the Americas region.
