Structural Engineering
Design, construction, durability, large-scale testing and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement.
Dr. El-Salakawy’s research has advanced the state-of-the-art and significantly contributed to the development of new technologies and systems using Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP) and Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCC) in new construction and repair of concrete structures. His extensive experience in FRP reinforcement led to the development of novel structural systems and techniques using FRP reinforcement. He has been heavily involved in the design, construction and monitoring of the first five bridges constructed in Canada using FRP bars in their concrete deck slabs.
Dr. El-Salakawy is a Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He was a Canada Research Chair in Durability and Modernization of Civil Structures (2006-2016) in the same department. He carried out his PhD research work and post-doctoral training in Structural Engineering at the University of Waterloo (1996-2001), and then worked as a Research Professor at the University of Sherbrooke for five years (2001-2006) before joining the University of Manitoba in 2006. He is the recipient of the 2020 Mete A. Sozen Award for Excellence in Structural Research presented by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Dr. El-Salakawy's research interests are in the field of concrete structures, particularly the durability, construction, design, seismic performance, and large-scale laboratory testing of FRP-reinforced concrete structures. He has published over 300 research papers in leading journals and international conferences on various aspects of reinforced concrete and composite materials. Dr. El-Salakawy is an active member of several Canadian and American code committees, international journal editorial boards, international conference committees, research centres and professional societies. Dr. El-Salakawy is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), and the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC).
Dr. El-Salakawy is not seeking graduate students.
Most of the research contributions presented in this section have been coauthored with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows under Dr. El-Salakawy’s supervision. Most of the peer-reviewed journal articles were published in (1) ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction, the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering, which are the most prestigious and most influential international journals in the field of composites for construction and bridges, respectively; (2) ACI Structural Journal, which is the most prestigious and most influential journal in the field of structural concrete; and (3) Elsevier Journals including a) Engineering Structures, b) Cement and Concrete Composites, c) Structures, and d) Composites Part B, which are the most prestigious international journals in the field of structural materials and structural engineering. In addition, he published two book chapters and 31 technical research reports and edited five international conference proceedings (one as editor and four as co-editor). He has h-index of 42 (i10-index of 97) with more than 6,000 citations (on google scholar). Dr. El-Salakawy has also given keynote lectures at various national and international conferences.
