The general area of De. Zhang's research is agricultural structures and environment. This specialization covers structural design and environmental control for plant and animal production and storage of agricultural and good products.

Expertise

Design of controlled environment for animals and plants, odour in animal production operations, mechanics of granular materials, numerical modeling of bulk solids systems.

Research description

Dr. Zhang's research covers mechanical behaviour of granular materials, loads in grain storage bins, and discrete element and finite element modeling of bulk solids systems, controlled environment for animal production; air quality in livestock production facilities; airborne transmission of animal diseases; smart vertical farming systems, and greenhouse production in northern climate conditions.

Biography

Dr. Qiang Zhang is a professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering, University of Manitoba, and a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Manitoba. He has been conducting research in the area of controlled environment agriculture. Dr. Zhang is a member of several professional societies, including Canadian Society for Biongineering (served as President) and American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
