About UCTEL

The Ultra-Clean Trace Elements Laboratory (UCTEL; pronounced as "you-see-(and)-tell") is an ultra-trace analytical laboratory at the University of Manitoba, dedicated to the study of environmental chemistry and biogeochemistry of trace elements.

View of Ultra-Clean Trace Elements Laboratory
  • Led by Dr. Feiyue Wang, UCTEL was funded primarily by Canada Foundation for Innovation (2001, 2006, 2017), with contributions from the Canada Research Chairs program and the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program. It has been involved in numerous major research networks and projects including the ArcticNet Network of Centers of Excellence, GEOTRACES, the Circumpolar Flaw Lead System Study (CFL), the Northern Contaminants Program (NCP), the Collaborative Mercury Research Network (COMERN), the Metals in the Environment Research Network (MITE-RN), and the Metals in the Human Environment Research Network (MITHE-RN).

Major research activities include biogeochemistry of mercury and other trace elements, Arctic marine cryospheric chemistry; and the interplay between chemical contamination and climate change.

Equipment and instruments

UCTEL is a metal-free, Class 100 cleanroom laboratory with a Class 10 enclosure. All the lab counters and fume hoods are made of polypropylene. The temperature is controlled at 20oC, and the relative humidity is controlled at 40%.

Major instruments include:

  • Milli-Q Element ultra-pure water purification system
  • LED Solar Simulator
  • Agilent 1200 HPLC
  • Dionex ICS5000 IC
  • Agilent 8900 Triple Quardrupole ICP-MS
  • SeaFAST SP3
  • PerkinElmer DRC II ICP-MS
  • Agilent 6410 ESI-QQQ-MS
  • Tekran 2600 mercury analyzer
  • Brooks Rand MERX methylmercury analyzer
  • HPLC-ICP/ESI-MS (Simultaneous Atomic and Molecular MS)
