Fellowship details
This Fellowship program - offered through Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) - has emphasis on clinical training, but also includes participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, and/or graduate dental orthodontic students.
Training
Attendance
Participants of the Fellowship Program are required to attend on a full-time basis for a minimum duration of 12 months.
Successful completion of the program entails:
- Passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations.
- Completing the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice expected of a graduating senior resident.
Certification and recognition
Upon successfully completing the IDSF Program, graduates will be awarded a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba.
Subsequently, upon satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will issue a letter of support and attestation of program completion to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), which administers the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).
Selection process
Priority consideration will be given to internationally trained orthodontic specialists who can provide evidence of at least two years of clinical practice and active involvement in academia. This involvement may include holding a rank, achieving tenure status, engaging in academic teaching, participating in scholarly activities, and publishing relevant work. Additionally, candidates expressing a desire to pursue a career in academic orthodontic dentistry in Canada will receive preference.

Eligibility requirements
Educational background
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a graduate of a general dentistry program.
Orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics dentistry education
- Have completed a full-time, three-year orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics specialty program
English proficiency
You must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting one of the following criteria. Tests must be completed within the last 24 months:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Achieve a minimum overall score of 100, with no section below 100.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in each section.
- Pearson Test of English Academic: Achieve a minimum overall score of 61.
- Exemption: If you have a secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the Exemption List, you do not need to provide an English proficiency test score.
Citizenship requirement
For the 2024 intake, you must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
Currently, we cannot confirm if there will be an intake for the 2025-26 academic year. If an intake is confirmed, this webpage will be updated with details on how to apply and the associated deadlines.

Personal and professional documentation
Prepare the following items to include with your application:
- Personal statement/letter of intent: Write an outline of your career goals, highlighting your aspirations in the field of dentistry.
- Curriculum vitae (CV): Include your most current CV that details your education, work experience, and any relevant accomplishments.
- Reference letters: Gather three reference letters, all written in English. These letters should come from individuals who can speak to your qualifications and character.
- Certificate/diploma: Provide proof of completion for your general dentistry degree and your specialty training program. Make sure to include original transcripts in English.
Professional licensing (if applicable)
If you have been licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction, you will need to submit:
- Letters of good standing: Include letters from your current or previous licensing bodies. Ensure these letters are in English.
Proof of citizenship or residency (if applicable)
To verify your citizenship or residency, please submit:
- Citizenship or residency copies: Provide copies of your Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
English language proficiency (if applicable)
- Results from your IELTS (Academic), Pearson Test of English (Academic), or TOEFL test.
Important information to keep in mind
- Fees: Remember that applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and any registration and license fees.
- Incomplete applications: Please prepare your application materials carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Make sure that all transcripts and reference letters are submitted no later than three weeks from your application submission date.
- Responsibility for documentation: Keep in mind that the department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure everything is submitted on time.
