We are currently accepting applications for the 2025/26 intake of our 12-month full-time Fellowship in Prosthodontics, which begins July 1, 2025.

To apply for this fellowship, you must provide proof that you have completed a full-time, three-year university-based specialty program in prosthodontics from a non-accredited institution.

Fellowship details

This program is designed to enrich your clinical skills while providing you with valuable learning experiences.

Participants will engage in a variety of enriching experiences, including:

  • Clinical training: Hands-on clinical experience is at the core of our program, ensuring you develop the necessary skills and expertise.
  • Seminars and didactic learning: Engage in stimulating discussions and gain valuable insights from experienced faculty and industry experts.
  • Scholarly project: Contribute to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery through research and scholarship.
  • Teaching opportunities: Share your knowledge and passion by teaching undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, as well as graduate oral and maxillofacial surgery students.

Training overview

Participants in the Fellowship Program will commit to a full-time schedule for a minimum of 12 months. To successfully complete the program, you must:

  • Pass the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations.
  • Complete assigned clinical cases to meet the clinical standards of practice expected of a graduating senior resident.

Selection process

We prioritize candidates who are internationally trained prosthodontists, particularly those who demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 2 years of clinical practice.
  • Involvement in academic settings, including rank, tenure status, teaching, scholarly activities, and publications.
  • A strong desire to pursue an academic career as a prosthodontist in Canada.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the International Dental Specialty Fellowship (IDSF) Program, graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME) at the University of Manitoba. 

After satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will provide a letter of support and attestation of completion of the program to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC).

This letter will be instrumental in your journey to administer the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).

Eligibility requirements

Educational background

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a graduate of a general dentistry program.
Prosthodontic dentistry education
  • Have completed a full-time, three-year prosthodontic dentistry specialty program.

English proficiency

You must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting one of the following criteria. Tests must be completed within the last 24 months:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Achieve a minimum overall score of 100, with no section below 100.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in each section.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic: Achieve a minimum overall score of 61.
  • Exemption: If you have a secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the Exemption List, you do not need to provide an English proficiency test score.

Citizenship requirement for 2025 intake

For the 2025 intake, you must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.

How to apply

To apply for the prosthodontics fellowship, you must submit the following items directly to the program by the application deadline:

  1. Completed application form: Fill out the online application form.
  2. Application fee: Include a non-refundable application fee of $100. This fee should be payable to the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.
  3. Required documents: Submit all the documents listed in the tab below.

Personal and professional documentation

Prepare the following items to include with your application:

  • Personal statement/letter of intent: Write an outline of your career goals, highlighting your aspirations in the field of dentistry.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV): Include your most current CV that details your education, work experience, and any relevant accomplishments.
  • Reference letters: Gather three reference letters, all written in English. These letters should come from individuals who can speak to your qualifications and character.
  • Certificate/diploma: Provide proof of completion for your general dentistry degree and your specialty training program. Make sure to include original transcripts in English.

Professional licensing (if applicable)

If you have been licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction, you will need to submit:

  • Letters of good standing: Include letters from your current or previous licensing bodies. Ensure these letters are in English.

Proof of citizenship or residency (if applicable)

To verify your citizenship or residency, please submit:

  • Citizenship or residency copies: Provide copies of your Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

English language proficiency (if applicable)

  • Results from your IELTS (Academic), Pearson Test of English (Academic), or TOEFL test.

Important information to keep in mind

  • Fees: Remember that applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and any registration and license fees.
  • Incomplete applications: Please prepare your application materials carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Make sure that all transcripts and reference letters are submitted no later than three weeks from your application submission date.
  • Responsibility for documentation: Keep in mind that the department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure everything is submitted on time.
