Fellowship details

We are excited to offer the pediatric dentistry fellowship, a unique opportunity for internationally trained dental specialists eager to deepen their expertise in pediatric dentistry and practice in Canada. This fellowship, hosted by postgraduate medical education, is designed to support your professional growth in a nurturing and collaborative environment.

Fellowship focus

As a participant in the fellowship, you will embark on a full-time journey lasting a minimum of 12 months. Successful completion of the program includes:

  • Examinations: Passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations.
  • Clinical cases: Completing assigned clinical cases that meet the high standards expected of a graduating senior resident.

Certification

Upon completion of the fellowship, you will receive a certificate from Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Manitoba.

Additionally, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will provide a letter of support and confirmation of your program completion to the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. 

This letter is essential for your path to the National Dental Specialty Examination and will help pave the way to a fulfilling career in pediatric dentistry.

Selection process

We encourage internationally trained pediatric dentists to apply. We prioritize candidates who demonstrate:

  • A minimum of two years of clinical practice.
  • Involvement in academic activities, such as rank, tenure status, teaching, scholarly contributions, and publications.

Admission and application requirements

Eligibility requirements

General dentistry education
  • Must be a graduate of a general dentistry program.
Pediatric dentistry education
  • Must have completed a full-time, 2-year pediatric dentistry specialty program.

English proficiency

  • Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL): Minimum score of 100 overall (no section below 100).
  • International English language testing system (IELTS) academic: Minimum score of 7.0 in each section.
  • Pearson test of English academic: Minimum overall score of 61.
  • Test validity: Must be taken within the last 24 months.
  • Exemption: Secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the exemption list.

Additional information

  • For the 2024 intake: Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

How to apply

To apply for the Pediatric Dentistry Fellowship, you will need to submit the following items directly to the program once the intake cycle reopens:

  2. Application fee: A non-refundable fee of $100 (payable to the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry).
  3. Required documents: Include all necessary documents listed in the tab below.

Personal and professional documentation

Prepare the following items to include with your application:

  • Personal statement/letter of intent: Write an outline of your career goals, highlighting your aspirations in the field of dentistry.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV): Include your most current CV that details your education, work experience, and any relevant accomplishments.
  • Reference letters: Gather three reference letters, all written in English. These letters should come from individuals who can speak to your qualifications and character.
  • Certificate/diploma: Provide proof of completion for your general dentistry degree and your specialty training program. Make sure to include original transcripts in English.

Professional licensing (if applicable)

If you have been licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction, you will need to submit:

  • Letters of good standing: Include letters from your current or previous licensing bodies. Ensure these letters are in English.

Proof of citizenship or residency (if applicable)

To verify your citizenship or residency, please submit:

  • Citizenship or residency copies: Provide copies of your Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

English language proficiency (if applicable)

  • Results from your IELTS (Academic), Pearson Test of English (Academic), or TOEFL test.

Important information to keep in mind

  • Fees: Remember that applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and any registration and license fees.
  • Incomplete applications: Please prepare your application materials carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Make sure that all transcripts and reference letters are submitted no later than three weeks from your application submission date.
  • Responsibility for documentation: Keep in mind that the department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure everything is submitted on time.
