My research program is focused on advancing oral health equity for vulnerable populations across Canada, including seniors in long-term care, Indigenous communities, newcomers and low-income families. I lead multi-site, community-engaged studies that evaluate access to dental care, health policy interventions and innovative service delivery models—including on-site oral health screening tools, AI-based diagnostic platforms and culturally safe approaches to care.
A cornerstone of my current work involves co-developing oral health screening tools and care protocols for seniors in personal care homes, in collaboration with families, caregivers and health system partners. I also conduct secondary data analyses using national datasets like the CHMS and CLSA to inform policy on dental insurance, frailty and access to care. My work bridges academia and practice, generating actionable evidence that informs clinical protocols, curriculum development and national dental care planning.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in learner-centered, community-engaged, and equity-focused education. As a dental public health educator, I strive to inspire students to think beyond the operatory—to understand the social determinants of oral health and view themselves as agents of change in addressing oral health disparities.
I create inclusive, interactive, and reflective learning environments that prioritize critical thinking, cultural humility, and real-world application. Whether lecturing on epidemiology or leading community externships, I aim to connect foundational science and policy with lived experiences in underserved communities. Through case-based learning, public health simulations, and storytelling, I foster engagement and empathy.
Mentorship is a cornerstone of my teaching, and I provide personalized guidance to undergraduate and graduate learners, supervising numerous BSc(Dent) projects. I encourage students to pursue scholarly inquiry, co-design projects with community partners, and translate research into meaningful impact. I aim to graduate reflective, compassionate clinicians and public health leaders—professionals who are equipped not only with clinical skills but with the understanding of how systemic inequities shape oral health outcomes, and how they can advocate for justice through evidence-based care, community partnerships, and policy engagement.
Dr. Anil Menon earned his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), followed by an MBA specializing in Health Care Administration and then completed his Master of Science in Dental Public Health.
