Biography

Dr. McLachlin holds a Ph.D. in Operations Management from the University of Western Ontario and MBA and B.Sc.(Eng) degrees from the University of Alberta.

He served as Head of the Department of Supply Chain Management until his retirement in 2015; he now continues as a Senior Scholar. He also served briefly as the Director of the Asper MBA program and as the Acting Director of the Transport Institute.

He has published in various journals such as the Journal of Operations Management, the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and the International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management, was an Associate Editor (1998 to 2008) for the Journal of Operations Management, and was an Associate Editor and the Canadian Regional Editor (2009 to 2015) for Operations Management Research.

He has taught various courses in operations and supply chain management, in the undergraduate and graduate programs, including operations management, operations strategy, seminar in supply chain management, advanced supply chain management, service operations, production seminar, and management of quality and reliability.

Research Interests

Operations strategy; supply chain strategy; management of humanitarian supply chains and preparedness for disaster response; lean healthcare operations, international transport of perishable food products; just-in-time manufacturing; process innovation.
