Research

Research interests

Kristen MacMillan leads the soybean and pulse crop agronomy and cropping systems lab through the Agronomist-in-Residence program, a unique partnership between the Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences that prioritizes applied research, extension and teaching. The goal of her research program is to study and develop best management practices and cropping systems for grain legumes (soybean, dry bean and pea) and optimize agronomy, profitability and sustainability for farmers in Manitoba and western Canada.

Current research projects

Since 2017, Kristen has developed and led 18 applied research projects throughout agro-Manitoba. She is active in extension and the results of her research are made available through an annual report to support rapid on-farm adoption. Current projects include:

  • Dry bean nitrogen management strategies
  • Pea cropping intensity effects on Aphanomyces euteiches and grain yield
  • Effect of preceding crop, residue management and P fertilizer on yellow pea
  • Biological nitrogen fixation in modern dry bean cultivars
  • Soybean iron deficiency chlorosis and yield
  • Effect of weed control timing on soybean yield
