Course information

This hybrid short course offers in-depth information and instruction of soils found within Manitoba as it relates to the study and practice of arboriculture.  You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how soil physical, chemical, and biological properties influence tree health and productivity. 

Topics include:

  • Basic soil properties
  • Soil and water management
  • Soil fertility and soil analysis interpretation
  • Urban soil challenges and soil improvement strategies

The intended audience is for International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborists; Non-certified Arborists (tree care workers); Landscaping & Horticultural Professionals and Master Gardeners. 

Up to 6 ISA Continuing Education Credits may be awarded to ISA Certified Arborists for completing this short course.

  • Thursday, September 18:
    • Virtual evening session
    • 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Thursday, September 25:
    • Virtual evening session
    • 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Thursday, October 2:
    • Virtual evening session
    • 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, October 4:
    • In-person field and classroom session. Hosted at the UM Fort Garry campus.
    • 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Thursday, October 9:
    • Test (online via UM Learn platform)
    • 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
    • Participants that are successful in passing a short test will receive a Letter of Accomplishment.

Fee

$400.00 (includes GST)

Registration will be considered complete once full payment has been received.

Instructor

Megan Westphal:
Megan is a Soil Survey Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture where she classifies, maps and interprets soil resource information that is used by many stakeholders in the province. She has obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Winnipeg and a MSc in Soil Science from the University of Manitoba. She has experience working in the government, non-profit, industry and academia sectors within the agriculture industry. She currently sits on the Manitoba Soil Science Society executive committee and helps organize annual soil related conferences and field days.

Are there prerequisites required for taking the MB Soils (Arboriculture) course?

There are no required prerequisites needed in order to register for the course.

Do I need to be a student of the University of Manitoba in order to register for the course?

No.  You do not need to apply to the University of Manitoba in order to register and take the course.  The course is open to the public.

I have registered for the MB Soils (Arboriculture) course. Will I receive a University of Manitoba of student number?

No.  The School of Agriculture  MB Soils (Arboriculture) course is a non-degree/non-credit “short course” which does not require an individual to apply to the university to become a student in order to take the course.

I have registered for the MB Soils (Arboriculture) course. Will I receive university course credits?

No.  The School of Agriculture  MB Soils (Arboriculture) course is a non-degree/non-credit “short course”.

I am a current or former U of M student. Can I take the course for credit or audit the course?

No.  The School of Agriculture  MB Soils (Arboriculture) course is a non-degree/non-credit “short course”.

Will I receive a tax receipt for personal income tax purposes?

No.  The School of Agriculture  MB Soils (Arboriculture) course is a non-degree/non-credit “short course” and therefore a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) will not be issued by the University of Manitoba.

Are academic course fees waived for those aged 65+?

No.  The School of Agriculture  MB Soils (Arboriculture) course is a non-degree/non-credit "short course" and is not subject to the waiving of academic fees for Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are age 65 and over.
