Research

Research interests

Dr. Aukema's research focuses on novel lipid mediators called oxylipins, which are bioactive compounds made from fats. The study of oxylipins is of interest in nutrition is because dietary composition impacts health through the formation of these oxylipins. The Nutrition and Lipid Mediators laboratory is located in the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre.

Current research projects

  • Using oxylipins to assess dietary requirements for essential fatty acids
  • Diet and drug interventions in models of polycystic kidney disease
  • Differences in sex effects of dietary fatty acids on oxylipins
  • Effects of dietary fatty acids on oxylipins and inflammation in obesity
  • Roles of oxylipins in food toxin effects on health
