Dr. Liu’s research focuses on taxonomy and pest control.
- Insect systematics: integrative taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny (leafhopper, tumbling flower beetle/Mordellidae, and more)
- Insect diversity and monitoring
- Agricultural and forest entomology and pest control
- Ecology

- Taxonomic study of Mordellidae (Insecta: Coleoptera)-based on comparative and Geometric morphology and DNA-Barcoding.
- Systematic study of the genus Empoasca worldwide
