Eligibility

Bursary awards are primarily based upon financial need, as opposed to scholarships, which are primarily based on academic merit. Because of this, all bursary applications require you to complete a budget section. Please note that the budget section of each application refers to a specific time period.

Eligibility criteria and application requirements vary by award. Most require that you submit the UM General Bursary application, and some require additional forms or attachments. Please be sure to read the details of each bursary carefully before applying. 

University of Manitoba General Bursary application

To qualify for bursaries at the University of Manitoba, you must apply for the University of Manitoba General Bursary through Aurora in addition to any individual applications that may be required for specific awards.

Fall and Winter Term General Bursary applications

The 2024/25 University of Manitoba General Bursary Application is now closed.

The general bursary application for the Fall and Winter Terms is available through the Aurora Student Portal (Aurora Classic). This application, with supporting documentation, must be submitted by the October 1 deadline date. Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • All undergraduate students must register and complete at least 60 per cent of a full course load over the regular academic session with registration in both the Fall and Winter terms. There are a few bursaries offered for part-time students registered in both Fall and Winter Terms.
  • Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums provided they are registered as full-time students over the Fall and Winter Terms with the Faculty of Graduate Studies
  • Continuing University of Manitoba students must meet a GPA requirement of a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. New students entering from high school must have a grade 12 average of 70 per cent or higher.
  • International students in their first year of post-secondary study in Canada are not eligible to apply to the general bursary program.
  • Financial need must be clearly documented on the application. Students who have applied for government student aid/loans from other provinces must provide a copy of a current "official" government loan assessment to support their declaration of financial need. Please note Manitoba Student Aid recipients do not need to submit a copy of their Notice of Assessment.

Selections for the bursaries will go out in early December of each year and bursary funds will be applied to Winter Term fees.

To request a refund after fall & winter fees are paid in full (you must ensure that your course schedule for winter term is finalized before requesting a refund), a secure online refund request form is now available through your Aurora Self Service account.  To find this form and request a refund please follow the steps below:
 
1. Log into your Aurora Self Service (Aurora Classic) account
2. Click on the "Enrolment & Academic Records" tab
3. Choose "Student Records"
4. Select "View Account Summary by Term"
5. Click “Request a Refund” (located at the bottom of the page)
6. Answer the three questions
7. Click "Submit"
 
Please Note: Banks have a daily Interac e-Transfer limit of $10,000.  Should your refund exceed this amount Finance will split your refund amount into two (2) Interac e-Transfers and you will receive separate emails in your U of M Student email account for each Interac e-Transfer.  From these two Interac e-Transfers, please deposit the largest dollar value e-Transfer first and then wait a minimum of 24 hours before depositing the second e-Transfer.

Louis Riel Bursaries at the University of Manitoba

Available to qualifying Red River Métis students with demonstrated financial need studying at the University of Manitoba.

To be considered for the Louis Riel Bursary in the fall/winter academic session, eligible Red River Métis students must complete both the Louis Riel Bursary Application (available through the Riel Institute) and the University of Manitoba general bursary application.  Both applications will be available in early August.  Please remember that the Louis Riel Bursary Application must be submitted by the October 1st deadline date. The University of Manitoba general bursary application is available through Aurora Student.

Spring and Summer Term General Bursary application

The Spring/Summer General Bursary application for 2025 will be available in May 2025.  The application is available in early May each year in the Aurora Student Portal (Aurora Classic). This application must be submitted by June 1st. Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students applying for the Spring/Summer general bursary program must be registered in a minimum of 6 credit hours between May 1 and August 31.
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, must be receiving government student aid (commonly referred to as "student loans") through their provincial student aid agency for the Spring/Summer Term to be eligible to apply for the University of Manitoba Spring/Summer bursary program.
  • Please note that eligible applicants from any province other than Manitoba must email a complete copy of their final government aid notice of assessment for the spring/summer term to the Financial Aid and Awards office by the bursary application deadline. If this is not submitted, their bursary application will be marked ineligible for funding.
  • Manitoba student aid recipients are not required to submit a copy of their assessment as we will receive this information directly from Manitoba Student Aid.
  • International students are eligible to apply for the spring/summer bursary program if they have resided in Canada for at least 12 months prior to May 1 of the current year.

AESES Bursary

The Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES) will provide seven bursaries valued at $1,000 each to the dependent children of its membership. The bursaries will be offered to students who are a dependent child of a regular current, retired or deceased AESES member. The bursaries will be offered to eligible students with the highest financial need. In addition, students must complete and submit the University of Manitoba General Bursary application (available through Aurora Classic) in order to be considered for this award.

Michael McAdam and Wendy Smith Bursary

An award valued at $1,000 will be offered to a returning student (one who has completed at least one year as a full-time student at the University of Manitoba) who:

  1. is enrolled full-time at the University of Manitoba, in any Faculty or School at the University;
  2. has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0;
  3. has demonstrated qualities of an entrepreneurial knowledge gained at the University by developing a business venture, a product, or a service outside the University;
  4. has demonstrated financial need on the standard University of Manitoba bursary application form.

Applicants for this award will be required to submit a brief essay outlining the scope of their entrepreneurial experience. Applicants must also complete the University of Manitoba General Bursary application available through Aurora Classic.

Louis Riel Bursaries at the University of Manitoba

University of Manitoba Entrance Bursary Application

This application will be used to select recipients for the following bursaries for high school students entering their first year of study in University 1 or any direct entry faculty, college or school at the University of Manitoba. Please note that to be considered for all other bursaries available at the University of Manitoba, students must also complete the University of Manitoba General Bursary Application that will be available through Aurora Student at the beginning of August each year.

The Asper Foundation offers renewable bursaries at $1,000 each for high school students who:
•    are enrolled full-time (minimum 60% course load) in their first year of study in University 1 or any faculty, college or school at the University of Manitoba;
•    have achieved a minimum average of 70% on their high school courses used for admission;
•    have demonstrated high financial need on the University of Manitoba Entrance Bursary application form;
•    up to five of these bursaries may be awarded to students who meet the above criteria and are also registered with Student Accessibility Services as a student with a permanent physical disability.

The award is renewable each consecutive year for up to three years provided the student maintains a full-time course load, achieves a minimum degree grade-point average of 2.5 each year and continues to demonstrate financial need yearly on the standard University of Bursary application form.

Please note that international students in their first year of post-secondary study in Canada are not eligible to apply to the general bursary program.

Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. offers three annual bursaries valued at $6,000 each for Canadian high school students who:

  • are Canadian citizens or permanent residents; 
  • have graduated from a Canadian high school or CEGEP no longer than 18 months prior to the start of the 2024/2025 academic session; 
  • have demonstrated financial need based on a Government Student Loan assessment from their home province and have completed the University of Manitoba Entrance Bursary application; 
  • Will register for full-time study (minimum 18 credit hours) in University 1 or any faculty or school at the University of Manitoba that admits students directly from high school; 
  • have achieved a minimum average of 80% on their high school courses used for admission. 

Applicants for this bursary must submit a complete copy of their final government loan assessment from their home province for the 2024/2025 academic session, along with their completed University of Manitoba Entrance Bursary application.

The awards are renewable in the second, third and fourth years of a student’s first degree program at the University of Manitoba. Recipients must maintain a full-time course load, achieve a minimum sessional grade-point average of 3.5 each year and continue to demonstrate financial need yearly (government student loan and University of Manitoba Bursary application must be submitted for each academic session).

The University of Manitoba Entrance Bursary Application for 2024 is now closed.  The application is available in May each year online through Aurora Student Portal (Aurora Classic) with a July 15th deadline date. 

 

University of Manitoba General Bursary Supplemental Awards

The following bursaries are found within the University of Manitoba General Bursary (Fall/Winter) application. You can access and submit the General Bursary and additional bursaries by logging into Aurora Classic.

Applications will be included in the following sections as they become available. Please only complete the ones where you meet the eligibility requirements.

Supplemental Bursary Application

This application is for bursaries that require extra-curricular activities, leadership experience, athletic involvement, memberships, and also to identify rural students.

Armed Forces General Bursary Application

This application is for students who are current or past members of the Canadian Armed Forces, or have family members or ancestors with service in the Canadian Armed Forces.

William and Olga Danyluk Bursary

This bursary is for members of St. Andrew's College who are registered in the Faculties of Arts, Science or Human Ecology. Eligible applicants must have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 2.5 and participate in College activities.

Enid Nemy Bursary

This bursary is for full-time students enrolled in their third or fourth year of study in any undergraduate program or in any year of study in the Faculty of Graduate Studies who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in journalism. Eligible applicants must have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.0.

Work History Application for Bursary Consideration

This bursary is for students who have a history of full-time employment prior to the current academic year (students with only summer time employment are not eligible).

This application is for students with accessibility, disability or medical issues.

College of Medicine Supplemental Bursary

This bursary is to be completed by College of Medicine students only. Extra information is required for consideration.

Victoria Inn Bursary

$475 bursary for a staff member or the sibling of a staff member of the Victoria Inn enrolled full-time in any faculty or school at the University of Manitoba. In addition, students must complete and submit the University of Manitoba General Bursary application in order to be considered for this award.

Youth in Care Grant

The University of Manitoba has established a fund in support of the Youth-In-Care Tuition Grants. The grants provide an opportunity for youth, who are or who have been in the care of Child and Family Services in Manitoba, to attend post-secondary education. The grants will support the costs of undergraduate tuition up to a maximum of $5,000 per year for a maximum of four years for each recipient.

Eligibility 

You may be eligible for this tuition grant if you are a current or former youth-in-care and meet the following criteria:

  • will be or are enrolled full-time (over both fall and winter sessions with a minimum of 60% course load) in any undergraduate degree or diploma program at the University of Manitoba in the year in which the award is tenable;
  • must have a record of satisfactory academic achievement which is defined as follows;
    • for first year students, a minimum entering average of 70% on those courses used for admission;
    • for continuing students, a minimum degree grade point average of 2.0;
  • are currently or formerly a youth-in-care of the Manitoba Child Welfare System;
  • have demonstrated financial need on the Youth-In-Care Tuition Grant application form

Renewal requirements

You are eligible to renew your tuition grant for an additional three years as long as you maintain the following:

  • remain enrolled full-time (minimum 60% course load) in any undergraduate degree or diploma program at the University of Manitoba;
  • continue to maintain a minimum degree grade point average of 2.0;
  • continue to demonstrate financial need on the standard University of Manitoba Bursary application form
  • Renewal application deadline: June 1
