Lisa Engel is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Manitoba’s College of Rehabilitation Sciences. Her research focuses on improving the financial capability and well-being of individuals living with chronic health conditions or disabilities, particularly those with associated cognitive impairments. Engel’s work examines the intersection of financial capability and health, recognizing that addressing financial issues is foundational to improving overall well-being.
Using mixed-methods approaches, Engel’s research explores both individual and environmental factors that affect financial well-being. She also investigates the roles of health and social-care practitioners and financial professionals in assessing and supporting financial capability and well-being.
Engel holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Toronto, where she also completed a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. She earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology & Health Studies with a focus on Adapted Physical Activity from the University of Regina.
Her research has been supported by the CIHR Allied Health Fellowship and the Arthritis Society Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Engel is affiliated with the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto, where she contributes to the Measurement Research Unit.
Her work continues to influence the development of interventions and supports that help individuals with chronic health conditions or disabilities manage financial challenges and improve their quality of life.
