Research summary

Dr. Leanne Leclair’s research focuses on understanding how occupational therapists engage with communities, their preparation and ongoing professional development needs related to community development practice, the organization and delivery of community rehabilitation services, and the integration of occupational therapy in primary care. Her research has been funded provincially and nationally.

Current research interests include:

  • Integration of occupational therapy in primary care
  • Organization and delivery of community rehabilitation services for older adults
  • Exploring occupational therapists’ practice in community development

Biography

Dr. Leanne Leclair is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Her professional journey has included diverse experiences as an occupational therapist in different regions, including Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Throughout her career, she has undertaken various roles, providing care to individuals in inpatient and outpatient settings for adult mental health, adult acute care (covering neurology, medicine, orthopedics, emergency), pediatric outpatient care, school therapy, and community-based private practice.

Dr. Leclair's dedication to teaching and research supervision is evident through her mentorship of over 50 graduate students. Her research efforts are centered around applied and community-engaged approaches, aiming to enhance programs and services to better serve the community.

In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Leclair has assumed leadership roles that reflect her commitment to the field:

  • She serves as the head of the Department of Occupational Therapy, underscoring her commitment to fostering the growth of future occupational therapists.
  • She holds the position of president of the Association of Canadian Occupational Therapy University Programs, reflecting her dedication to advancing occupational therapy education nationally.
  • Dr. Leclair's role as the chair of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Certification Exam Committee showcases her involvement in upholding professional standards.

Dr. Leclair's educational journey includes:

  • Bachelor of Arts from Collège Universitaire de St. Boniface
  • Bachelor of Health Science in Occupational Therapy from McMaster University
  • Master's and Doctor of Philosophy in Community Health Sciences from the University of Manitoba
