About portable charger lending

Students must use their library account pincode along with their ID card to borrow a portable charger. Create or change your pincode.

Locations

Elizabeth Dafoe Library (Fort Gary campus)

The portable charger kiosk is located in Elizabeth Dafoe Library, entrance level, across from the Brown Lab.

Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (Bannatyne campus)

The portable charger kiosk is located in the Neil John MacLean Health Sciences Library, main floor, beside the spiral staircase.

Loan period

Portable chargers are available for a 4-hour loan period or until library closing if less than 4 hours remain. The portable charger must be returned to the kiosk within 4 hours to avoid incurring overdue fines.

Overdue fines

An overdue fine of $3 per hour is charged for late return of the portable chargers.
Overdue fees continue to accumulate to a maximum of $50.

Non-returns

There is an automatic $500 fine if you do not return the portable charger within 3 days. For this reason, DO NOT LEAVE THE CHARGER UNATTENDED.

Borrow a portable charger

  1. Tap Borrow charger button.
  2. Read the terms and conditions of borrowing a portable charger and tap Agree to continue.
  3. Swipe your UM ID card or tap the Use keyboard button to enter your ID card number using the on-screen keypad.
  4. An available portable charger will be unlocked and partially pop out of the kiosk and the screen will tell you which number to remove. Remove the portable charger.
  5. Your loan will be confirmed on the screen and you will also receive a courtesy email message, sent to your myumanitoba.ca address, providing you with your exact return time.
  6. Tap Finish button.

Note: A portable charger cannot be borrowed while it is charging or is damaged, as indicated in yellow on the kiosk screen.

Return a portable charger

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SWIPE YOUR CARD TO RETURN A PORTABLE CHARGER.

  1. Insert portable charger into any empty charger space in the kiosk. Firmly push the portable charger in until you hear a click and it reaches some resistance.
    Warning: You may be charged late fees, if the kiosk cannot detect that the portable charger has been returned. 
  2. A return receipt will be shown on the screen, followed by a return confirmation email.
  3. If the portable charger is returned within 5 minutes, you may be asked to, select one of the options regarding the portable charger’s condition.

If you accidentally swiped your card to return a portable charger, you may get a message that you already have a portable charger out. Begin again simply by inserting the portable charger in an empty slot. If you want to ensure the portable charger has been returned, check your library account.

Using the portable charger

YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN CABLE OR POWER CORD OR USE A WIRELESS (Qi) ENABLED DEVICE.

The portable charger provides multiple options for charging or powering your device:

  • USB-A and USB-C: connect the relevant standard USB cable to the related USB port.
  • AC-110V output:
    • press and hold the power switch button for 3 seconds to open the power display
    • press and hold the AC switch button for 3 seconds to start AC, AC Out lights up to enter AC mode.
    • connect the power plug of your device to the AC110 volt socket of the portable charger to power the device.
  • Wireless charging: Press and hold the power switch for 3 seconds. Place wireless enabled (Qi) phone on the wireless charging area to charge.

Press and hold the power switch for 3 seconds to turn off the portable charger. Alternatively, device will shut off on its own after 30 seconds without load.
