The Manitoba Eastern European Heritage Society (MEEHS) is a group of researchers inspired by a desire for knowledge of the architectural and cultural history of Ukrainian churches in Manitoba. The motivation to document and preserve this legacy was initiated by concern over the loss of Ukrainian churches across Manitoba. MEEHS researchers and university students, since 1983, have researched, photographed, and documented approximately 151 churches across the province.

MEEHS has identified 240 Ukrainian churches, including a small number of non-Ukrainian Eastern European churches. In addition, based on this research, the researchers published a volume entitled “Monuments to Faith: Ukrainian Churches in Manitoba,” published by the University of Manitoba Press in 1990.

The principal researchers were University of Manitoba faculty: Dr. Stella Hryniuk (Dept. of History), Dr. Roman Yereniuk (Dept. of Church History, St. Andrew’s College), and Basil Rotoff (Dept. of City Planning).

In the Manitoba Eastern European Heritage Society (MEEHS) fonds, you can find:

  • Photographs and slides of Ukrainian churches in Manitoba
  • Architectural and cultural research and documentation on individual churches
  • Research records, documentation, and correspondence of MEEHS
  • Research for the manuscript “Monuments to Faith”
  • Interviews with or about the church leaders, parish life, and the construction of the churches
