Fellowship details
This Fellowship program places emphasis on clinical training, but also includes participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, and/or graduate oral and maxillofacial surgery students.
Training
Participants of the Fellowship Program will attend on a full-time basis for a minimum of 12 months. Successful completion of the program will consist of passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations and the completion of the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice of a graduating senior resident.
Selection process
Priority will be given to internationally trained oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists who demonstrate evidence of a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice and involvement in academics (e.g., rank, tenure status, academic teaching, scholarly activities, publications) and have a desire to pursue an academic oral and maxillofacial surgeon career in Canada.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the IDSF Program, graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba. After satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will provide a letter of support and attestation of completion of the program to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) who will be administering the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).

Eligibility requirements
General dentistry education
- Must be a graduate of a general dentistry program.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery education
- Must have completed a full-time, minimum 3-year, oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty program.
English proficiency
- Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL): Minimum score of 100 overall (no section below 100).
- International English language testing system (IELTS) academic: Minimum score of 7.0 in each section.
- Pearson test of English academic: Minimum overall score of 61.
- Test validity: Must be taken within the last 24 months.
- Exemption: Secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the exemption list.
Additional information
- For the 2025 intake: applications will be accepted from Canadian citizens/permanent residents of Canada and international applicants.

The 2025-26 intake cycle is now closed. When the cycle re-opens, the following must be submitted directly to the program by the stated deadline.

Personal and professional documentation
Prepare the following items to include with your application:
- Personal statement/letter of intent: Write an outline of your career goals, highlighting your aspirations in the field of dentistry.
- Curriculum vitae (CV): Include your most current CV that details your education, work experience, and any relevant accomplishments.
- Reference letters: Gather three reference letters, all written in English. These letters should come from individuals who can speak to your qualifications and character.
- Certificate/diploma: Provide proof of completion for your general dentistry degree and your specialty training program. Make sure to include original transcripts in English.
Professional licensing (if applicable)
If you have been licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction, you will need to submit:
- Letters of good standing: Include letters from your current or previous licensing bodies. Ensure these letters are in English.
Proof of citizenship or residency (if applicable)
To verify your citizenship or residency, please submit:
- Citizenship or residency copies: Provide copies of your Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
English language proficiency (if applicable)
- Results from your IELTS (Academic), Pearson Test of English (Academic), or TOEFL test.
Important information to keep in mind
- Fees: Remember that applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and any registration and license fees.
- Incomplete applications: Please prepare your application materials carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Make sure that all transcripts and reference letters are submitted no later than three weeks from your application submission date.
- Responsibility for documentation: Keep in mind that the department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure everything is submitted on time.
