Fellowship details

This Fellowship program places emphasis on clinical training, but also includes participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, and/or graduate oral and maxillofacial surgery students.

Training

Participants of the Fellowship Program will attend on a full-time basis for a minimum of 12 months. Successful completion of the program will consist of passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations and the completion of the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice of a graduating senior resident.

Selection process

Priority will be given to internationally trained oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists who demonstrate evidence of a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice and involvement in academics (e.g., rank, tenure status, academic teaching, scholarly activities, publications) and have a desire to pursue an academic oral and maxillofacial surgeon career in Canada. 

Certification

Upon successful completion of the IDSF Program, graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba. After satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will provide a letter of support and attestation of completion of the program to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) who will be administering the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).

Admission and application requirements

Application deadline: The 2025-26 intake cycle is now closed.

To apply for the International Dental Specialist Fellowship, you must:

  • Be a graduate of a general dentistry program
  • Completed a full-time, minimum 3-year, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty program TOEFL or IELTS is required unless you have received a secondary school diploma and/or university degree from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List

For the 2025 intake cycle, applications will be accepted from Canadian citizens/permanent residents of Canada and international applicants.

  • $100 non-refundable application fee (payable to Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry)
  • All the required documents listed in the tab below

Required documents

To apply, please submit the following documents:

1. Personal and Professional Documentation

  • Personal Statement/Letter of Intent: Outline your career goals.
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Three Reference Letters: Must be in English.
  • Certificate/Diploma: Proof of completion of a general dentistry degree and 4-year full-time specialty training program in oral and maxillofacial surgery (original transcripts in English required).

2. Professional Licensing (if applicable)

  • Letters of Good Standing: If you have been licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction, you must submit letters of good standing from your current or previous licensing bodies (in English).

3. Proof of Citizenship or Residency (if applicable)

  • Copies of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

4. English Language Proficiency

Submit proof of one of the following (if applicable):

  • TOEFL: Must be taken within the last 24 months, with a minimum score of 100 (no category score under 100).
  • IELTS Academic Version: Must be taken within the last 24 months, with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components in the same sitting.

Note: TOEFL/IELTS is required unless you have received a secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country listed on the  English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List.

Important Information

  • Applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation of certificates of professional conduct fees, and registration and license fees.
  • Incomplete Applications: Incomplete applications will not be considered. All transcripts and reference letters must be received no later than 3 weeks from the application submission date.
  • Responsibility: The department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts.
